Francis Ford Coppola Scene Analysis

The scene I have chosen analyse is the penultimate scene of the movie Apocalypse Now where Captain Willard meets Colonel Kurtz deep in the Vietnamese jungle.

On his journey the captain's mental state had evidently began to become unstable to the point where he is wading in a swamp like substance, his face is covered in the thick liquid, this shows that he isn't the same person he once was.

As he approaches the Colonel in his shadow filled space of solitude there is an animalistic look in his eyes, like a predator slowly creeping up on it's prey. The shadows add to this feel as Willard's face goes in and out of the darkness that could be representative of his Mental state once again.

As he starts to attack the Colonel it is shown through the use of a sacrifice that is being held outside of the room that Kurtz is in, the captain is now acting on that animalistic nature as he attacks Kurtz over and over ruthlessly, showing no Remorse. The Captain that first entered the jungle in search for Kurtz had all but gone.
