Media Essay

First off we learnt the different stages of media production. This includes pre prod., prod. and post prod.

In pre production things such as roles and scripts are astroturfing and written, it is the foundation for what the product will become, without the pre production there will be nothing to aspire to complete.

The production is where most of the time will be spent. Rehearsing and filling scenes for hours on end to make sure that you capture the perfect angles at the perfect times to really bring life to the project and make it just how you want.

Post produzione is the final stage before your project an be seen by thousands, hundreds of thousands maybe even millions of people and so this is where you want to make sure that everything is as perfect as it an be. This is where the editors of the project an shine, honing their skills to include those perfect moments from the endless hours of footage to include in the final product and discarding the parts which may not be on par. this is also essential as they an reinsure that the sound effects come in and out at the perfect times, captivating the audience and immersing them entirely in the media product.

After learning the different stages of producing something in the media industry we learnt some of the terminology that is used in the media industry. We learnt things such as intertextuality, which is when one media product uses something from another by either paying homage to it, making a parody of it or just simply referencing it. This technique is used for something called audience gratification. Audience gratification is when an audience can feel good about seeing something in one media text that they recall from another that they had seen previously. This is used frequently in the media today from new series, such as the Netflix original, Stranger things where they reference films such as Ghostbusters and halloween while also having a sense of the goonies and even giving someone who played a role in the goonies as a kid a role on the show. As expected this sort of thing could bring fans of those films a lot of happiness as they will be able to pick up on these references that maybe others who haven't seen the film may not be able to.

Another important part of media terminology that we learnt about was iconography. Iconography is, silly put, the type of things in the miss en scene that you'd expect to see in certain types of genres. for example in a thriller you'd usually see maybe a crime scene in the beginning with maybe a detective trying to solve it throughout the rest of the media text. Another example of this is in horror. An audience or reader expect there to be a chase scene with a killer, probably wielding some sort of weapon and, generally, an innocent possibly young female running from them. These are things that people have generally associated with certain genres of media texts as time has gone by and things that perhaps scared people in a horror movie get used again in another to try to get the same reaction.
